Voces Presas (Incarcerated Voices)
PEN America’s Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) and PEN International, in partnership with Civil Rights Defenders (CRD), launch a new campaign to shine a light on the stories of imprisoned and harassed Cuban artists. The campaign, “Voces Presas” (Incarcerated Voices), is an online campaign that calls for the release of all imprisoned artists and political prisoners in Cuba and the respect and guarantee of artistic freedom on the island.
The “Voces Presas” campaign gives visibility to the stories of Cuban artists who have been imprisoned and harassed because of of their artistic expression. This campain calls for the freedom of all artists unjustly imprisoned in Cuba, and for the respect and guarantee of artistic freedom on the island.
The campaign features profiles and backgrounds of each artist, as well as music videos and other samples of their creative work. It also documents the harassment and imprisonment they have faced as a result of the repression of freedom of expression in Cuba. This social media campaign calls on the international community to stand in solidarity with Cubans whose freedom of expression is under attack, and demands that the Cuban government release these and all artists imprisoned for their political opinions.
Recomendations
This campaign makes the following recommendations to the Cuban government, to interested organizations and individuals, as well as to members of the international community regarding the condition of artists and free expression in the country:

- The Cuban government should immediately release all imprisoned artists and guarantee the free exercise of art and activism in the country.
- The embassies of the European Union and Latin America in Cuba should demand that the government allow them to visit the three imprisoned artists to verify their conditions and should subsequently issue reports with the findings of these visits.
- Interested organizations and individuals should demand that the Cuban government remove the requirement of state approval for artists to freely exhibit their work, one of the most repressive measures of Decree 349.
