Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) and PEN International are excited to share the second cohort of Cuban Migrant Artists Resilience Fellows, following the completion of projects by the first cohort.
Influenced by the findings and recommendations of ARC, PEN International, and Cubalex’s report Método Cuba: Independent Artists’ Testimonies of Forced Exile, the Cuban Migrant Artists Resilience Fellowship empowers Cuban creatives in exile to continue their craft and create meaningful and timely projects addressing topics like artistic freedom, cultural rights, and other pertinent issues. The second cohort of fellows work in a myriad of disciplines, backgrounds, and aesthetic sensibilities, showcasing the richness of the Cuban independent art scene that remains united in their commitment to free artistic expression.
The fellowship provides artists with a resilience grant of 7,000 USD and six months of personalized individual virtual training and professional development opportunities. The program seeks to meet fellows’ unique artistic needs and aspirations while encouraging them to establish robust networks with the global artistic community and foster collaborations that transcend boundaries. When the program ends, fellows are invited to present their work, providing a valuable opportunity to share their creative visions with a global audience.
Fellows
Carlos Manuel Álvarez
Carlos Manuel Álvarez was born in Matanzas, Cuba in 1989. He studied journalism at the University of Havana. In 2016 he founded the independent Cuban magazine El Estornudo and his texts and opinion columns have been published in El Pais, The New York Times, The Washington Post and Internazionale. In 2017, he was selected by the Hay Festival to form part of the Bogotá 39 list, which brings together the 39 best Latin American writers under the age of 40, and published his first collection of journalistic chronicles, La tribu. Portraits of Cuba (Sexto Piso). In 2021, he received the Don Quixote Award for Journalism (part of the awards of the King of Spain) and was selected by Granta magazine among The Best Young Narrators in Spanish. He has published the novels Los caidos (Sexto Piso, 2018) and Falsa guerra (Sexto Piso, 2021). In 2022, he won the Premio de Crónica Anagrama/UANL Sergio González Rodriguez for the volume Los intrusos. In 2023, he won the Prix Carbet de la Caraïbe et du Tout-Monde 2023 for the French translation of his novel Los caidos. His books have been translated into several languages, including English, French, Italian, Arabic, and Croatian.
Evelyn Sosa Rojas
Evelyn Sosa (Havana, 1989) is a photographer with a preference in working with intimate and documentary portraits. Author of the book Havana Intimate, through the lens of Evelyn Sosa. She is a graduate of the Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism program at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York, where she was awarded the Director's Fellowship and the Arnold Newman Prize.
In 2017, Evelyn exhibited “Extrañas aves de paso,” her first solo show at the Mariano Rodriguez Gallery in Havana. Her second solo exhibition “Havana Intimate” opened in New York in 2019. In 2023 she exhibited the duo show “You are Everyone Who Tells a Story” at Space 776 in New York. Since 2011 and throughout her creative practice, she has participated in several group exhibitions in Cuba, the United States, Japan, and Europe.
Fabiana Salgado Bernal
Fabiana is an audiovisual producer and graphic designer; graduated from the Cátedra de Altos Estudios de la EICTV with a Master's Degree in Film Essay. Her work focuses on experimentation with the self-referential, in the exploration of the language of documentary; with intimate interest in the many forms of Cuban emigration. She has also collaborated for many years in various media, working as a reporter, editor, and documentary filmmaker. Some of her work has been exhibited at festivals such as DOC Buenos Aires International Documentary Film Festival, the Visible Evidence XXIV documentary film conference, the Havana Film Festival, and the INSTAR Film Festival, among others.
Hamlet Lavastida
(Havana, August 9, 1983) Harassed, threatened, imprisoned and forced into exile in exchange for freedom. Hamlet Lavastida is one of Cuba's most representative contemporary visual artists, winner of awards such as the Idealist Prize for Contemporary Art 2022 and he has participated in numerous residencies. Lavastida graduated from the Superior Institute of Art in Havana in 2009 and was a student of the Cátedra de Arte de Conducta created and headed by Tania Bruguera. He has exhibited his work in countries such as Germany, Spain, and Poland.
Lavastida’s work channels creative expression as a tool for political activism, focused on the fields of history, ideology, and collective memory. The artist is interested in the diagnosis and the reconstruction of a particular iconographic memory associated with the ideological notion of "prophylaxis," wielded by the Cuban Revolution of 1959 as an indoctrination tool aimed at the conversion of the individual into the long-awaited archetype of the “New Man.” Lavastida works with posters, prints, collages, photos, and videos. His work arose from the need to create an objective criterion for certain hidden areas of the implementation, administration, and functioning of state political practices in Cuba.
José Luis Aparicio Ferrera
José Luis Aparicio Ferrera (Cuba, 1994). Independent filmmaker and curator. Graduated in Film Directing from Cuba's University of the Arts (ISA). He has directed the fiction short films Tundra (2021) and Dryland (2019), and the medium-length documentary Dreams adrift (2020). His films have been selected by festivals such as Sundance, Locarno, Raindance, Miami, BAFICI, Guanajuato and Curta Cinema. Tundra was awarded at Fantaspoa, New Jersey, New York City Independent, Pendance, and Seattle Latino Film Festival. In 2022 he was invited to Locarno’s Open Doors program and received one of the Prince Claus Seed Awards. He is currently developing his first feature film, The Sea, a project selected by the Spanish Film Academy Residencies. As part of Kassel's documenta fifteen, he curated Land Without Images, the largest retrospective of Cuban independent cinema to date. Since 2021 he has been the artistic director of the INSTAR Film Festival.
Ricardo Figueredo Oliva
Producer, screenwriter, and film director. Graduated in 2002 from the International School of Film and Television of San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV) specializing in Production and a postgraduate degree in directing in 2015 at the Workshop in the New York Film Academy (NYFA) in the United States. Founder in 2006 of Cooperativa Producciones, a film development and production group, with which he has produced the first works of several Cuban directors. He has been responsible for many independent productions in Cuba that have won awards at the Latin American New Film Festival in Havana. His projects have been presented at distinguished international festivals in Germany, Amsterdam, Holland, Argentina, United States, and Spain. Since 2006 he has independently written and directed documentaries such as “Sexo, Historias y Cintas de video,” “Operación Alfa o lo que le pasó a Benito Manso,” “La singular historia de Juan sin nada,” “La teoria cubana de la sociedad perfecta,” “Rojo amarillo y verde,” and his latest short fiction film “El Encargado.”
El Radikal (Richard Adrián Zamora Brito)
El Radikal, whose real name is Richard Zamora Brito, is a Cuban rapper and activist born in 1992 in Colón, Matanzas, Cuba. He began his musical career back in 2010 and quickly stood out for his critical and politically charged lyrics, addressing issues such as freedom of expression, censorship, and human rights in Cuba.
Through his music, El Radikal has become a dissident voice on the island, challenging the Cuban regime and denouncing political and social repression. He has been the target of persecution and arrests by Cuban authorities, but remains an influential figure in the Cuban underground music scene.
His activism goes beyond music, participating in protest movements and supporting other persecuted artists and activists. Radikal is a symbol of resistance and struggle for freedom in Cuba.
RasSandino (Sandor Pérez Pita)
Sandor Pérez Pita, “RasSandino,” was born in Cuba in 1983 in the city of Havana. His artistic career began pre-university. As an MC, he was part of several rap and reggae groups such as “Advertencia” and “Estudiantes Sin Semilla.” He was also involved with the Rastafari community in Cuba. He was also a founder of Movimiento San Isidro (MSI), a group of artists and journalists who through art resisted the political repression of the Cuban regime. He created the independent cultural project “Afro Vida” in Alamar. Due to her work as an activist, he traveled to the United States in 2019 to a training course for social leaders. At the end of these studies, he made the difficult decision to go into exile in that country. Once here, he continued his activist work of making visible the Cuban situation through art. He organized several cultural and graffiti events and launched an MP3.
Sandra Ceballos
Sandra Ceballos is a visual artist. She was born in Guantánamo, Cuba, in 1961. She currently works as an artist in Madrid and has been working as a creator for 39 years. She has done painting, sculpture, engraving, photography, installations and performances. Between 1980 and 1985, she studied Visual Arts in San Alejandro, Havana. In 1995, she won first prize in the Elso Padilla National Contemporary Painting Competition, organized by the National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba. In 1996, she obtained a scholarship in Art in General, NY, and in Longwood Project Bronx Studios, NY, sponsored by the Andy Warhol Foundation. In 1998, she received another scholarship in Audiovisual Media at the University of Basel, Switzerland, Pro Helvetia. In 2022, she was the recipient of the CINTAS Foundation grant in Miami. Recently, in 2022, she undertook a personal exhibition that was presented by Cuban artist Tania Bruguera at the 15th edition of Documenta Kassel, in Germany. Her artistic work has been exhibited in numerous venues both in Cuba and abroad. In 1994, she founded Cuba's first independent art space, Espacio Aglutinador, in Havana, where she worked as co-curator for 5 years and as curator and director for 25 years.
Yimit Ramírez González
Multidisciplinary artist with more than 20 years of experience combining film, animation, and visual arts. His training at the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro, the Instituto Superior de Diseño and the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, has enriched his artistic perspective, allowing him to explore diverse techniques and media.
His projects address themes of identity and freedom, focusing on the atrocities of the Cuban dictatorship and the figure of Fidel Castro, an obsession he tries to exorcize through different media such as comics, interactive applications, music videos, graphic humor, augmented reality, and film.
In 2020, he founded with five other partners the audiovisual production company Free Media en Madrid, where he develops the virtual reality project “Los Ojos de Mila Kaos” and the fiction feature film “Loading.” In addition, he works as a consultant and createch, an artist specialized in technology, and in other film productions.

Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) y PEN Internacional se complacen en anunciar la segunda edición del Programa de Becas de Resiliencia para Artistas Cubanos Migrantes, tras el éxito del grupo inaugural.
A partir de los hallazgos y las recomendaciones del informe Método Cuba: Testimonios de artistas independientes sobre el exilio forzado, publicado por ARC, PEN Internacional y Cubalex, el objetivo principal del Programa de Becas de Resiliencia para Artistas Cubanos Migrantes es empoderar a los artistas a través de la ejecución de proyectos artisticos que sirvan como poderosos medios para abordar temas como la libertad artistica, los derechos culturales y otras problemáticas relevantes. El segundo grupo de becarios encapsula una amplia gama de disciplinas, trayectorias y esencias estéticas, resaltando la riqueza del arte independiente cubano, una comunidad que sigue unificada en su compromiso con el libre ejercicio de la expresión artistica.
El programa proporcionará a los artistas una beca de resiliencia de 7.000 USD y seis meses de formación virtual, individual y personalizada. También ofrecerá desarrollo profesional para apoyar sus necesidades y aspiraciones artisticas. Los artistas podrán establecer redes firmes con la comunidad artistica mundial, fomentando colaboraciones y conexiones que trascienden fronteras geográficas. Al final del programa, los miembros serán invitados a presentar sus proyectos, lo que les brindará la oportunidad de compartir sus visiones creativas con un público amplio.

Carlos Manuel Álvarez
Carlos Manuel Álvarez nació en Matanzas, Cuba en 1989. Estudió Periodismo en la Universidad de La Habana. En 2016 fundó la revista cubana independiente El Estornudo y sus textos y columnas de opinión han sido publicadas en El Pais, The New York Times, The Washington Post e Internazionale. En 2017 fue seleccionado por el Hay Festival para la lista de Bogotá 39, que reúne a los 39 mejores escritores latinoamericanos menores de 40 años, y publicó su primera colección de crónicas periodisticas, La tribu. Retratos de Cuba (Sexto Piso). En 2021 recibió el Premio Don Quijote de Periodismo (parte de los premios Rey de España) y fue seleccionado por la revista Granta entre Los Mejores Narradores Jóvenes en Español. Ha publicado las novelas Los caidos (Sexto Piso, 2018) y Falsa guerra (Sexto Piso, 2021). En 2022 obtuvo el Premio de Crónica Anagrama/UANL Sergio González Rodriguez por el volumen Los intrusos. En 2023 obtuvo el Prix Carbet de la Caraïbe et du Tout-Monde 2023 por la traducción al francés de su novela Los caidos. Sus libros han sido traducidos a varias lenguas, entre ellos inglés, francés, italiano, árabe y croata.
Evelyn Sosa Rojas
Evelyn Sosa (La Habana, 1989) es una fotógrafa con preferencia por el retrato intimo y documental. Autora del libro Havana Intimate, through the lens of Evelyn Sosa. Es graduada del programa de Práctica Documental y Periodismo Visual en el International Center of Photography (ICP) en Nueva York, donde obtuvo la Beca del Director y la Beca Arnold Newman.
En 2017 Evelyn expuso “Extrañas aves de paso”, su primera muestra personal en la Galeria Mariano Rodriguez de La Habana. Su segunda exposición personal “Havana Intimate” se inauguró en Nueva York en 2019. En 2023 expuso la muestra a dúo “You are Everyone Who Tells a Story” en Space 776 de Nueva York. Ha participado en varias exposiciones colectivas en Cuba, Estados Unidos, Japón y Europa durante su práctica desde 2011.
Fabiana Salgado Bernal
Realizadora audiovisual, diseñadora gráfica. Graduada de la Cátedra de Altos Estudios de la EICTV con Máster en Cine Ensayo. Su trabajo se centra en la experimentación con lo autorreferencial, en la exploración del lenguaje del documental; con intimo interés en las muchas formas de la emigración cubana. Ha sido ademas colaboradora por muchos años en diversos medios de comunicación, desempeñándome como reportera, editora y documentalista. Algunas de sus obras han sido exhibidas en Festivales como DOC Buenos Aires Muestra Internacional de Cine Documental, la conferencia sobre cine documental Visible Evidence XXIV, el Festival de Cine de La Habana y la Muestra de Cine INSTAR, entre otros.
Hamlet Lavastida
(La Habana, 9 de agosto de 1983) Hostigado, amenazado, encarcelado y obligado al exilio a cambio de libertad, Hamlet Lavastida es uno de los artistas visuales contemporáneos más representativos de Cuba. Ha ganado reconocimientos como el Premio Idealista de Arte Contemporáneo 2022 y ha participado en varias residencias. Lavastida se graduó en el Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana en 2009 y fue alumna de la Cátedra de Arte de Conducta creada y dirigida por Tania Bruguera. Ha exhibido su obra en paises como Alemania, España y Polonia.
La obra de Lavastida canaliza la expresión creativa como herramienta de activismo político, centrada en los campos de la historia, la ideología y la memoria colectiva. El artista se interesa por el diagnóstico y la reconstrucción de una determinada memoria iconográfica asociada a la noción ideológica de "profilaxis", esgrimida por la Revolución Cubana de 1959 como herramienta de adoctrinamiento destinada a la conversión del individuo en el ansiado arquetipo del "Hombre Nuevo". Lavastida trabaja con carteles, grabados, collages, fotos y vídeos. Su obra surge de la necesidad de crear un criterio objetivo sobre ciertas áreas ocultas de la implementación, administración y funcionamiento de las prácticas políticas estatales en Cuba.
José Luis Aparicio Ferrera
José Luis Aparicio Ferrera (Cuba, 1994). Cineasta y curador independiente. Licenciado en Dirección de Cine por la Universidad de las Artes de Cuba (ISA). Ha dirigido los cortos de ficción Tundra (2021) y El Secadero (2019), y el mediometraje documental Sueños al pairo (2020). Sus peliculas han sido seleccionadas por festivales como Sundance, Locarno, Raindance, Miami, BAFICI, Guanajuato y Curta Cinema. Tundra fue premiado en Fantaspoa, New Jersey, New York City Independent, Pendance y Seattle Latino Film Festival. En 2022 fue invitado al programa Locarno Open Doors y recibió uno de los Prince Claus Seed Awards. Actualmente desarrolla su primer largometraje, El Mar, un proyecto seleccionado por las Residencias Academia de Cine de España. En el marco de la documenta fifteen de Kassel, curó Tierra sin imágenes, la mayor retrospectiva del cine independiente cubano realizada hasta la fecha. Desde 2021 se desempeña como director artistico del Festival de Cine INSTAR.

Productor, guionista y director de cine. Graduado en 2002 de la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV) en la especialidad de Producción y un postgrado de dirección en 2015 en el Workshop del New York Film Academy (NYFA) en Estados Unidos. El Radikal (Richard Adrián Zamora Brito)
El Radikal, cuyo nombre real es Richard Zamora Brito, es un rapero y activista cubano nacido en 1992 en Colón, Matanzas, Cuba. Comenzó su carrera musical por allá por el 2010 y rápidamente se destacó por sus letras criticas y politicamente cargadas, abordando temas como la libertad de expresión, la censura y los derechos humanos en Cuba.
A través de su música, El Radikal se ha convertido en una voz disidente en la isla, desafiando al régimen cubano y denunciando la represión politica y social. Ha sido objeto de persecución y arrestos por parte de las autoridades cubanas, pero sigue siendo una figura influyente en la escena underground de la música cubana.
Su activismo va más allá de la música, participando en movimientos de protesta y apoyando a otros artistas y activistas perseguidos. El Radikal es un simbolo de resistencia y lucha por la libertad en Cuba.
RasSandino (Sandor Pérez Pita)

Sandra Ceballos
Sandra Ceballos es una artista visual. Nació en Guantánamo, Cuba, en 1961. Actualmente realiza su labor artistica en Madrid y lleva 39 años de trabajo como creadora. Yimit Ramírez González

Sus proyectos abordan temas de identidad y libertad, centrándose en las atrocidades de la dictadura cubana y la figura de Fidel Castro, una obsesión que intenta exorcizar a través de diferentes soportes como historietas, aplicaciones interactivas, videos musicales, humorismo gráfico, realidad aumentada y cine.
En 2020, fundó junto a otros cinco socios la productora audiovisual Free Media en Madrid, donde desarrolla el proyecto de realidad virtual “Los Ojos de Mila Kaos" y el largometraje de ficción “Loading". Además, trabaja como consultor y createch, artista especializado en tecnologia, en otras producciones cinematográficas.
