2023 Cuban Migrant Artists Resilience Fellowship

PEN International and the Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) are thrilled to announce the inaugural cohort for the Cuban Migrant Artists Resilience Fellowship, a program influenced by the findings in our report, Método Cuba: Independent Artists’ Testimonies of Forced Exile. Selected from a noteworthy pool of over a hundred Cuban-born applicants, the 10 fellows span a range of artistic disciplines yet share an unwavering commitment to free artistic expression.
The Cuban Migrant Artists Resilience Fellowship provides artists with a resilience grant of 7,000 USD and six months of personalized individual virtual training and professional development to support their unique artistic needs and aspirations. Artists will establish robust networks with the global artistic community, fostering collaborations and connections that transcend geographical boundaries. At the end of the fellowship, members will be invited to present their work, providing a valuable opportunity to share their creative visions with a broad audience.

Amaury Pacheco del Monte
Amaury Pacheco del Monte is an artist and activist for cultural and civil rights. His work includes poetry, sculpture, performance, audiovisual work, and independent cultural production. He develops and shares the “Poéticas Operativas,” a method of civic activation with poetic procedures. He founded and directed OmniZonafranca (1997-2017), a space of creation and resistance that organizes the festival Poesía Sin Fin. Founded and co-coordinated the San Isidro Movement, a civic activism platform against Decree 349 and other forms of censorship and repression in Cuba. He has been persecuted, arrested, and exiled to the United States. This book tells his story, motivations, challenges, and dreams. It's the testimony of a man who believes in the power of words and action to transform reality.
Ana Rosa Diaz Naranjo
Ana Rosa Diaz Naranjo is a poet, narrator, plastic artist, and actress. She has published the poetry books Pasos en el borde, (Editorial Sanlope, 2003), Profecías del Arquero, (Editorial Sanlope, 2008), Otra vez el cielo (editorial Negro sobre Blanco, Venezuela, 2013), Poemas Oral Traumáticos y Cósmicos en Profecias del arquero, (Frente de Afirmación Hispanista, A.C. México, 2018), Glosar el viento (Editorial Primigenios, Estados Unidos, 2022), El hueco, (Ilíada Ediciones, Alemania, 2019), Rani y la charca misteriosa (Editorial Primigenios, Estados Unidos, 2020), and Monte adentro (Élida Ediciones, Madrid, 2023).
She is a member of the International Puppetry Association and a delegate of the Spanish Chapter of The Cove Rincon (United States).
Carlos Quintela
Carlos Quintela is a Cuban filmmaker and artist. His debut film, "THE SWIMMING POOL," was screened in the Panorama del 63o section of the Berlin Film Festival and received more than 15 prizes in festivals. Martin Scorsese, as President of the Jury, awarded him the Jury Prize for Best First Film at the Marrakech International Film Festival in 2012. With his second feature, "The Project of the Century," he won numerous awards, including the Tiger HIVOS and the Lions Film Award at the IFF Rotterdam 2015. His third feature film, "THE WOLVES OF THE EAST" (2017), starring Tatsuya Fuji, was co-produced by Naomi Kawase. Quintela is a multifaceted filmmaker-artist who has developed as a screenwriter, script consultant for ScriptEast, editor, producer, and visual artist. He lives in Madrid and is part of the diaspora of Cuban artists settled in the Spanish capital.
Claudia Patricia Pérez
Claudia Patricia Pérez is a Cuban designer and artist based in Brazil. Her artistic practice is transdisciplinary: the work ranges from unorthodox incursions in the field of publications, production of protest posters, drawings to installations. Claudia Patricia is interested in speculative text and daring images, historic ways of intentional provocation, and their subversive symbolism. Her work seeks to question official and hegemonic narratives in moments of political and economic crisis. She is also the founder of the project Mujercitos Magazine.
cymoonv
cymoonv is a self-taught digital artist from Havana who explores new subjectivities around the topics of self-perception, queerness, and the performance of virtual identities through fluid representations of bodies set in worlds inspired by nature and posthumanism. Her work has been exhibited internationally, virtually and AFK, including Miami Art Week, Refraction Festival, MMMAD (Madrid’s Urban Digital Art Festival), IGNITE Broward Festival, EROTIKA Festival, The Wrong Biennale, and diverse web3 projects.
Daniel Sánchez Alfaro
Daniel Sánchez Alfaro is a visual artist interested in reflecting distinct social realities through his work. His artistic focus centers on comics and illustration, and he has had the privilege of participating in exhibitions related to freedom of expression with the Mesa de Diálogo de la Juventud Cubana, he was published in the Franco-Belga comic book “Krónikas,” and collaborated with the magazine “El Estornudo.” Through his work he has sought to capture the irreverent criticism towards dictatorships and contexts where freedom is being lacerated. Having grown up in a dictatorship and openly opposing the regime, Daniel's work has always been characterized by political undertones and the confrontation of established dogmas.
David D'Omni
David D'Omni is a musician and painter. His artistic formation took place in the city of Alamar as part of the Interdisciplinary project Omni-Zonafranca. His music is a step between the genres of art rock, new age, experimental music, or world music, with a strong influence of urban genres such as Hip Hop, Reggae, and electronic music. He has given lectures and concerts in several US Universities, such as: Miami Dade College, University of South Florida, University of Florida, Florida International University, Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Trinity, Xavier, Tulane, and John Hopkins: also in several countries such as: Spain, Poland, Croatia, Lithuania, Germany, Czech Republic, Guadeloupe, Chile, Panama, Peru, Mexico, France, Switzerland, Costa Rica and Denmark has been part of several international festivals such as New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festival (New Orleans), Rotilla Festival (Cuba), Trinity hip hop festival (Hartford), Festival HIP HOP SESSIONS (Guadeloupe), Cannes Film Festival (France) and Roskilde Music Festival (Denmark). Besides his artistic work, he has produced several festivals, workshops, readings, and exhibitions for other independent artists in Cuba, promoting social change through art. He was selected as an official delegate representing Cuba's independent civil society at the 7th and 8th Summit of the Americas.
Nonardo Perea
Nonardo Perea moves through various artistic manifestations, including performance, literature, acting, photography, audiovisual, ceramics, drawing and installation. To the date, all their works have been done independently. All their work is seen from a personal and intimate vision, almost always defending the themes related to the human body and the problems facing the LGBTIQ+ collective. They belong to the San Isidro movement. In 2021, they concluded their first feature film: “Vulgarmente Clásica X” where they narrate their encounter with the Cuban State Security. They have made the self-fiction documentary "La otra vida" (2023) a piece that addresses the difficult relationship of a heterosexual man with a gay man. They are currently exiled in Spain.
Ruber Osoria
Ruber Osoria is a Cuban photographer who immigrated to Chile in 2018, with the dream of buying his first camera. In 2019, he founded along with other photographers AFOCONCE, an educational photography collective located in the city of Concepción, which seeks to disseminate and develop “photographic culture.” His work has been recognized in international photography festivals such as the Emerging Photography Festival - BFOTO (España), the Italian Street Photo Festival, and the international festival of Santa Marta, Colombia. This year, his series “Chile, el otro terremoto” was selected by WE:NOW International Festival for Young Artists Creators in Madrid. Besides this, he has undertaken personal and collective exhibition in countries such as Argentina, the United States, Colombia, Chile, and Cuba, and his work has been published in magazines and platforms such as Lf Magazine, L’Œil de la Photographie, Blind Magazine, and the Street Photography.
Solveig Font Martinez
Solveig Font Martinez is an independent curator and activist with an academic background in Sociocultural Studies. In 2014, she founded Avecez Art Space, an independent art space in her home. Until her exile in 2021, this place hosted more than 20 exhibitions, as well as workshops and conferences. She fought against the restrictive Decree No. 349 and is a member of the group 27N, which advocated for artistic freedom and human rights. She was arrested during the popular demonstration on July 11, 2021. Additionally, she is one of the founders of the Forma Foco collective and a curator at Resistart Gallery. Her upcoming exhibitions include "On the New: Viennese Scenes and Beyond", ALIBI, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Vienna, Belvedere21, and "How Long Have You Been Blind", at the ENTRE gallery, as part of Vienna Art Week 2023. Both exhibitions are curated by Forma Foco + ENTRE gallery.

PEN Internacional y Artist at Risk Connection tenemos el placer de anunciar el grupo inaugural del Programa de becas de resiliencia para artistas cubanos migrantes, un programa influenciado por los hallazgos de nuestro informe, Método Cuba: Testimonios de artistas independientes sobre el exilio forzado. Seleccionados de entre un grupo notable de más de cien candidatos nacidos en Cuba, los 10 becarios abarcan una variedad de disciplinas artísticas, pero comparten un compromiso inquebrantable hacia la libertad de expresión artística.
El programa proporcionará a los artistas una beca de resiliencia de 7.000 USD y seis meses de formación virtual, individual y personalizada. También ofrecerá desarrollo profesional para apoyar sus necesidades y aspiraciones artísticas. Los artistas podrán establecer redes firmes con la comunidad artística mundial, fomentando colaboraciones y conexiones que trasciendan fronteras geográficas. Al final del programa, los miembros serán invitados a presentar sus proyectos, lo que les brindará una gran oportunidad de compartir sus visiones creativas con un público amplio.

Carlos Quintela
Carlos Quintela es cineasta y artista cubano. Su pelicula debut, "THE SWIMMING POOL," se estrenó en la sección Panorama del 63o Festival de Cine de Berlin y recibió más de quince premios en festivales. Martin Scorsese, como Presidente del Jurado, le otorgó el premio del Jurado a la Mejor Ópera Prima en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Marrakech en 2012. Claudia Patricia Pérez
Claudia Patricia Pérez es una diseñadora y artista cubana, radicada en Brasil. Su práctica artistica es transdisciplinaria: abarca desde incursiones poco ortodoxas en el ámbito de las publicaciones, producción de carteles protesta, dibujos hasta instalaciones. Claudia Patricia se interesa por el texto especulativo y la imagen atrevida, los modos históricos de provocación intencional y sus simbolismos subversivos. Su trabajo busca cuestionar las narrativas oficialistas y hegemónicas en momentos de conflicto politico y crisis económica. Es también fundadora del proyecto Mujercitos Magazine.

cymoonv es una artista digital cubana que explora nuevas subjetividades en torno a la performance de identidades virtuales y la autopercepción a través de representaciones fluidas de cuerpos que habitan mundos inspirados en la naturaleza y lo posthumano. Su trabajo ha sido expuesto internacionalmente, incluyendo Miami Art Week, Refraction Festival, MMMAD (Festival de Arte Urbano Digital de Madrid), IGNITE Broward Festival, EROTIKA Festival, The Wrong Biennale y diversos proyectos web3.
Daniel Sánchez Alfaro
Daniel Sánchez Alfaro es un artista visual interesado en reflejar distintas realidades sociales a través de su trabajo. Su enfoque artistico se centra en el cómic y la ilustración, y ha tenido el privilegio de participar en exposiciones relacionadas con la libertad de expresión con la Mesa de Diálogo de la Juventud Cubana, ha publicado en el libro de historietas Franco-Belga “Krónikas” y colabora con la Revista “El Estornudo”. A través de su trabajo siempre ha buscado plasmar la critica irreverente hacia dictaduras y contextos donde la libertad esté siendo lacerada. Al crecer en una dictadura y oponerse abiertamente al régimen su obra siempre se ha caracterizado por tener matices politicos y la confrontación de dogmas establecidos.
David D'Omni
David D'Omni es un músico y pintor nacido en la Habana, Cuba, el 3 de Marzo de 1984. Su formación artistica ocurre en la ciudad de Alamar como parte del proyecto Interdisciplinario Omni-Zonafranca. Su música se debate entre los términos art rock, new age, música experimental o world music, con una fuerte influencia de géneros urbanos como el Hip Hop, Reggae y música electrónica. Ha brindado conferencias y conciertos en varias Universidades de EEUU, tales como: Miami Dade College, University of South Florida, University of Florida, Florida International University, Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Trinity, Xavier, Tulane y John Hopkins: también en varios paises como: España, Polonia, Croacia, Lituania, Alemania, República Checa, Guadalupe, Chile, Panamá, Perú, México, Francia, Suiza, Costa Rica y Dinamarca a formado parte de varios festivales internacionales como New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festival (New Orleans), Rotilla Festival (Cuba), Trinity hip hop festival (Hartford), Festival HIP HOP SESSIONS (Guadeloupe), Cannes Film Festival (Francia) y Roskilde Music Festival (Dinamarca). Aparte de su obra artistica, ha producido varios festivales, talleres, lecturas y exposiciones para otros artistas independientes en Cuba, promoviendo el cambio social a través del arte. Fue seleccionado como delegado oficial representando a la sociedad civil independiente de Cuba en la 7ma y 8va cumbre de las Américas.
Nonardo Perea
Se mueve por diversas manifestaciones artisticas, donde se incluyen el performance, la literatura, la actuación, la fotografia, el audiovisual, la cerámica, el dibujo y la instalación. Nonardo Perea Hasta la fecha toda su obra la ha realizado de manera independiente. Todo visto desde una visión personal e intimista, defendiendo casi siempre los temas del cuerpo y las problemáticas del colectivo LGTBIQ+. Pertenece al movimiento de San Isidro. En el año 2021 concluyó su primer largometraje: ¨Vulgarmente Clásica X¨ donde narra su encuentro con la Seguridad del Estado cubano. Ha realizado el documental de auto ficción “La otra vida” (2023) un material que aborda la relación dificil de un hombre heterosexual con un Hombre gay. En la actualidad está exiliado en España.
Ruber Osoria
Ruber Osoria es un fotógrafo cubano que emigró a Chile en 2018 con el sueño de comprar su primera cámara. En 2019, fundó junto a otros fotógrafos AFOCONCE, un colectivo fotográfico educativo ubicado en la ciudad de Concepción que busca difundir y desarrollar la cultura fotográfica. Su trabajo ha sido reconocido en festivales internacionales de fotografia como el Festival de Fotografia Emergente BFOTO (España), el Italian Street Photo Festival y el festival internacional de Santa Marta, Colombia. Este año, su serie “Chile, el otro terremoto” fue seleccionada en WE:NOW Festival Internacional de Jóvenes Artistas Creadores en Madrid. Además, ha realizado exposiciones personales y colectivas en paises como Argentina, Estados Unidos, Colombia, Chile y Cuba, y su trabajo ha sido publicado en revistas y plataformas como Lf Magazine, L’Œil de la Photographie, Blind Magazine o la Street Photography.
Solveig Font Martinez
Solveig Font Martinez es curadora independiente y activista con una formación académica en Estudios Socioculturales. En 2014, fundó Avecez Art Space, un espacio independiente de arte en su hogar. Hasta su exilio en 2021, este lugar albergó más de 20 exposiciones, asi como talleres y conferencias. Luchó contra el restrictivo Decreto No. 349 y es miembro del grupo 27N, que abogó por la libertad artistica y los derechos humanos. Fue arrestada durante la manifestación popular del 11 de julio de 2021. Además, es una de las fundadoras del colectivo Forma Foco y es curadora de Resistart Gallery. Sus próximas exposiciones incluyen "On the New: Viennese Scenes and Beyond", ALIBI, en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Viena, Belvedere21 y "How Long Have You Been Blind", en la galeria ENTRE, como parte de Vienna Art Week 2023. Ambas exposiciones curadas por Forma Foco + galeria ENTRE.
