Artist Profile
PEN International publishes short stories by Oleg Sentsov
Prominent Ukrainian writer and filmmaker Oleg Sentsov was sentenced to 20 years in prison in August 2015 on spurious terrorism charges after a grossly unfair trial by a Russian military court, marred by allegations of torture. He has been on hunger strike since 14 May 2018 to urge the Russian authorities to release all Ukrainians unfairly imprisoned in Russia. PEN America, the Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) along with many other PEN centers are calling for his immediate release.
As part of their awareness efforts, PEN International published three short stories in English by Sentsov. These stories were first published in Russian by Laurus Press in Tales (2015).
These stories were translated by Dr. Uilleam Blacker, an academic and translator specializing in Ukrainian, Polish and Russian literature. His translations of contemporary Ukrainian literature have appeared in numerous publications, including Modern Poetry in Translation, Words Without Borders and Dalkey Archive's Best European Fiction series.
