At a time when oppressive and authoritarian regimes are cracking down on freedom of artistic expression, some artists use creativity, humor, satire, and parody to expose oppression and injustice and to present alternative points of view. However, when artists engage with irony through their work, they often increasingly face threats and attacks. In this session of KaribeArte, we analyze what the space for humour and satire in the Caribbean looks like today. What can we mock, and what can we not? What are the invisible frontiers shaping humor? What are the consequences faced by artists when they mock power?
