Art, Creative Protest and Political Change!

Virtual

Wednesday, July 14, 2021 6:00 pm ET
Artistic expression plays a critical role in processes of social change and democratization around the world. Creative action promoted by artists and members of civil society can be crucial in visualizing oppression and human rights violations, and in opening new possibilities for collective thought and action. With repressive and authoritarian governments increasingly attacking artistic and social creativity in the Latin American and Caribbean region, what tools can we develop to make peaceful and creative protest more effective? What can the direct experiences of dissident artists and activists teach us? Join ARC, along with CADAL, Provea, Zona de Descarga, and Freemuse, for this exciting virtual roundtable featuring artists and activists from the 27N and the San Isidro movements in Cuba, members of the Venezuelan collectives Labo Ciudadano and Comadres Púrpuras, and artistic and cultural promoters from the Guatemalan collective Festivales Solidarios. The event was supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
