Sandra Ceballos

Cuba

Sandra Amelia Ceballos Obaya is a visual artist. She was born in Guantánamo, Cuba, in 1961. She currently works as an artist in Madrid and has been working as a creator for 39 years. She has done painting, sculpture, engraving, photography, installations and performances. Between 1980 and 1985, she studied Visual Arts in San Alejandro, Havana. In 1995, she won first prize in the Elso Padilla National Contemporary Painting Competition, organized by the National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba. In 1996, she obtained a scholarship in Art in General, NY, and in Longwood Project Bronx Studios, NY, sponsored by the Andy Warhol Foundation. In 1998, she received another scholarship in Audiovisual Media at the University of Basel, Switzerland, Pro Helvetia. In 2022, she was the recipient of the CINTAS Foundation grant in Miami. Recently, in 2022, she undertook a personal exhibition that was presented by Cuban artist Tania Bruguera at the 15th edition of Documenta Kassel, in Germany. Her artistic work has been exhibited in numerous venues both in Cuba and abroad. In 1994, she founded Cuba’s first independent art space, Espacio Aglutinador, in Havana, where she worked as co-curator for 5 years and as curator and director for 25 years.
