Joint Statement Condemning the Cuban Government's Systemic Harassment of Writers, Artists, and Journalists

Writers and artists from the Americas and Caribbean send this message of solidarity to Cuban artists, musicians, journalists, writers and intellectuals:

WE STAND WITH YOU

The undersigned organizations representing authors, artists, journalists, and intellectuals urgently call on the government of Cuba to stop the systematic harassment of writers, artists, and journalists; to immediately release all those who have been arbitrarily detained, arrested, harassed, or disappeared; and to respect freedom of expression and artistic freedom.

Artists, writers, and members of the cultural community have been at the forefront of the protest movement, with collectives such as the San Isidro Movement and 27N denouncing the island’s severe restrictions on freedom of expression and demanding the right to express themselves and create art without being censored or punished. Through their art, and by taking to social media, these dissident writers and artists have successfully drawn domestic and international attention to the Cuban government’s disregard for civil and human rights, laying the foundation for the ongoing mass demonstrations. The anthem of the demonstrations, “Patria y Vida,” was written by members of the San Isidro Movement, including Maykel “El Osorbo” Castillo Pérez and Eliezer “El Funky” Marquez.

Cuba is currently in the midst of a devastating social, cultural, health, economic, and political crisis. Numerous problems have plagued the island recently, including food shortages, power outages, and insufficient medical services to address COVID-19, amid a context in which criticism of the government is commonly criminalized. In response, thousands of Cubans have taken to the streets demanding reform. Police and security forces have carried out arbitrary arrests and physical attacks against peaceful protesters, with news outlets reporting that more than 600 people have been detained or disappeared.

Many of these artists have paid a steep price for their art, writing, or activism. In the past several weeks, the Cuban government has unjustly imprisoned artists for exercising their rights to freedom of expression, artistic freedom, and freedom of peaceful assembly. The systemic harassment of artists has reached a chilling and unprecedented level, with scores of creatives arrested, detained, and disappeared for their roles in organizing or participating in mass demonstrations.

The authorities are attempting to silence these artists and writers by locking them up—but their voices cannot be silenced.

We demand that the Cuban government immediately release the following artists:

Escritores, escritoras y artistas de las Américas y el Caribe envian este mensaje de solidaridad a los y las artistas, periodistas, escritores e intelectuales en Cuba:

NO ESTÁN SOLOS

Las organizaciones abajo firmantes, que representan a autores, artistas, periodistas e intelectuales, hacen un llamado urgente al gobierno de Cuba para que detenga el acoso sistemático a los y las escritoras, artistas y periodistas, libere inmediatamente a quienes han sido detenidos arbitrariamente, arrestados, acosados o desaparecidos, y a respetar la libertad de expresión y la libertad artistica.

Artistas, escritores y escritoras, asi como actores culturales han estado al frente del movimiento de protesta, con colectivos como el Movimiento San Isidro y el 27N que denuncian las severas restricciones a la libertad de expresión en la isla y exigen el derecho a expresarse y crear arte sin ser censurados o castigados. A través del arte y los medios de comunicación, los y las escritoras y artistas disidentes han conseguido llamar la atención nacional e internacional sobre el menosprecio del gobierno cubano por los derechos civiles y humanos, sentando las bases de las actuales manifestaciones masivas. El himno de las manifestaciones, "Patria y Vida", fue escrito por miembros del Movimiento de San Isidro, como Maykel "El Osorbo" Castillo y Eliezer "el Funky" Márquez.

Cuba se encuentra actualmente en medio de una devastadora crisis social, cultural, sanitaria, económica y política. Numerosos problemas han asolado la isla recientemente, como la escasez de alimentos, los cortes de electricidad y la insuficiencia de servicios médicos para atender al COVID-19, en un contexto en el que las criticas al gobierno suelen ser criminalizadas. En respuesta, miles de cubanos han salido a las calles para exigir reformas. La policia y las fuerzas de seguridad han llevado a cabo detenciones arbitrarias y agresiones fisicas contra manifestantes pacificos, y los medios de comunicación informan de que más de 600 personas han sido detenidas o han desaparecido.

Muchos de estos artistas han pagado un alto precio por su creación artistica, su escritura o su activismo. En las últimas semanas, el gobierno cubano ha encarcelado injustamente a artistas por ejercer su derecho a la libertad de expresión, la libertad artistica y la libertad de reunión pacifica. El acoso sistemático a los artistas ha alcanzado un nivel escalofriante y sin precedentes, con decenas de creativos arrestados, detenidos y desaparecidos por su papel en la organización o participación en manifestaciones masivas.

Las autoridades intentan silenciar a estos artistas y escritores encerrándolos, pero sus voces no pueden ser silenciadas.
