Celebrating Seven Years of Impact

ARC Embarks on Its Next Phase

Consulte la versión en español más abajo

Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) begins a new phase as it announces its transition from being an incubated program at PEN America to becoming an independent entity with a global mandate. By becoming independent, ARC plans to further expand and strengthen its global network and reach to meet the growing demand from at-risk artists and cultural workers around the world facing unprecedented political, economic, social, and ecological challenges.

As it marks seven years since its launch, ARC celebrates a track record of success and impact in advancing artistic freedom worldwide. Launched by PEN America in 2017, ARC has steadily grown in size and programming, providing and securing funds for at-risk artists, facilitating relocation for individuals facing the most severe threats, and offering aid during emergencies, wars, and conflicts in countries worldwide. ARC has supported over 500 artists at risk in more than 45 countries around the world, partnered with hundreds of organizations globally to better connect resources to artists in need, and created a vibrant community of experts and advocates to further drive demands for artistic freedom at the international level. ARC has also been at the forefront of advocacy for artistic freedom and supporting artists targeted with censorship and persecution in key international arenas and human rights forums.

ARC extends its profound gratitude to PEN America for the years of support and encouragement as it has developed to become a keystone organization in the field of arts and human rights. At-risk artists around the world have come to rely on ARC as a primary resource for funds, professional opportunities and development, and security training and resources, while organizations in the arts and culture and human rights fields partner with ARC to advance protection mechanisms and strategies for artists and cultural workers.

In addition to benefiting directly from PEN America, ARC also strategically partners with the global PEN network, including PEN International and many national PEN chapters to advance programming and support to at-risk artists, including writers. Existing partnerships will persist, while new collaborations will flourish as ARC takes this step.

ARC already has maintained its own website and social media channels, and will continue to advance its work to establish its name and global identity, moving from the strong foundation it gained as a result of the incubation at PEN America.

At a time when more artists and cultural workers are facing threats, harassment, persecution, and physical violence in more places than ever before, ARC’s support and resources are in greater demand than ever. By shifting to this new phase, ARC is committed to and driven by its core mission of safeguarding the fundamental right to artistic freedom of expression, working towards a world where arts and cultural workers, regardless of country and discipline, can live and create without fear.

Celebrando Siete Años de Impacto

ARC Entra En Su Siguiente Fase
